Online Family History Show A Great Success!

The recent online Family History Show run by Discover Your Ancestors was a huge success, with over a thousand attendees. It followed the format of their very successful live shows, featuring an online lecture theatre, the popular 'Ask the expert' area – where visitors were able to put their questions forward to specialists – as well as a whole host of exhibitors in the virtual exhibition hall. These stalls were open throughout the day, allowing attendees to ask for advice by video or text, as well as buy products from more than 85 societies and companies.

The Lecture Theatre streamed talks from a number of experts, premiering at different times during the day and then being available for 48 hours so no matter where in the world you were you could catch all of them. This was one of the most popular features of the show.

The overwhelming number of people who have provided feedback to the organisers have been extremely positive in their experience of the virtual show. A second online Family History Show will take place on 26th September 2020, replacing their London event this year.

"I know the actual shows are great, but for us not able to get there, these online days are ideal. I put aside time to listen and it felt like a 'day away' from the usual routine. Well done and thank you." - Ruth

"I understand there must have been a lot of planning for the event under such tricky circumstances and it was absolutely superb in the end. Thank you very much for a really good day, your experts were helpful and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing their advice and information." - Sue

"I just wanted to say that Saturday's event was great...I had no idea this event would be global! This type of event will never replace the actual face-to-face events but they do give the exhibitors a chance to connect with people from around the world. When's the next one?!" - Maddy, The Crafty Genealogist

Queen Victoria had been on the throne for more than fifty years by the dawning of the 1890s. Britain's Prime Minister would be Lord Salisbury for a good part of the decade, only being out of office between 1892 and 1895. Mauve became a popular colour for silks and our ancestors' clothes in the 1890s. If our family history research has led us back to the 1890s then it can be very useful to understand more about the world in which our ancestors lived by searching a newspaper or magazine from the time...
