This guide to parish registers covers England, Scotland and Wales. It is a vital, time-saving tool, with county 'parish' maps showing pre-1832 parochial boundaries, colour-coded probate jurisdictions, starting dates of surviving registers, and churches and chapels, where relevant. The Index lists the parishes, with grid references to the county maps. It indicates the present whereabouts of original registers and copies, and whether a parish is included in other indexes. It also gives registration districts and census information.

Locating the real Downton Abbey

While the fictional Downton Abbey is set in Yorkshire, the real life house that stands in for it on TV is Highclere Castle in Hampshire. Highclere Castle sits to the south-west of Newbury and had at one time been one of the residences of the Bishops of Winchester. Now in the custodianship of the 8th Earl of Carnarvon, it has been the home of the Earl's family for generations.
