The "Who Do You Think You Are Live" event at
Olympia was the busiest family history fair yet. If you attended, I hope
you enjoyed it as much as we did. Getting your feedback is always our main
aim. We have already made some changes to the look of the interface of
TheGenealogist to help you get
the most out of the site.
Our free Genealogy Tutorials were packed and we got
very good feedback from attendees.
We have already started planning 2011 and are sponsoring
the SoG Family History Show section for the third year.
The show saw the launch of TreeView 2, a free-to-use
online family tree application, millions of records being
added to TheGenealogist.co.uk including a large section
of Parish Records, Wills and yet more records of the British
overseas. The third edition of the National Burial Index
with nearly 20 million records was also launched at the
show and is available from stock.
The article this month is by Joanne Smith and is about
how her family history research led to a great holiday and
exciting discoveries. "For many reasons it was the
best holiday I've ever taken and all down to an initial
casual search of the non-conformist records on TheGenealogist.co.uk."

snippets of
Anglo-Saxon, Chaucer and Shakespeare.
Barking up the wrong tree - John Titford
A series of cautionary tales for family historians, each designed to show
how easy it is
to make wrong assumptions or to draw inaccurate conclusions - in short, to
bark up the
wrong family tree. The focus will be on British genealogical sources, but
the examples
presented here will be based upon the presenter’s experience
as a professional genealogist working for clients on both
sides of the Atlantic.
John Titford at a book signing session on the S&N stand signed
his recently published the Penguin Dictionary of British
Surnames. This is a useful and fascinating guide to the
surnames that offer a unique insight into the place of origin,
the occupations - and even the personality traits - of our
ancestors. Detailed and informative, this dictionary covers
the widest range of British surnames and is essential reading
for anyone intrigued by the story of their name and by the
history of their family.
To celebrate the release of his new book, the first 3 customers who
order the Penguin Dictionary of British
Surnames will recieve a hand-signed version by John himself. To order your
copy click here. |

by Joanne Smith
"At the end of 2009 my husband and I visited
Britain and made the journey to the Yorkshire moors, where we were able to
visit many of the addresses I had discovered in relation to the Baker family
and other Quaker branches.
Thanks to the information I found I have been able to make contact with other
family members who have added further to my knowledge of the individuals in
my family tree.
For many reasons it was the best holiday I've ever taken and all down to an
initial casual search of the non-conformist records on TheGenealogist.co.uk."
