Free Library Subscriptions to Census Transcripts, BMDs & More
If you work for a council library your library could benefit from a 3 month free subscription. Our Transcripts are complete for 1841 to 1891 and are fully searchable across Name, occupation, relationship etc.

WHAT'S NEW ONLINE
All of the new data has been added into the All-Inclusive subscriptions which cost as little as £4.66 a month.
We are now putting the last year of census online. If you have a premium subscription you will find the images for the 1881 Census on TheGenealogist under 1881 Census Images.
Why only images? Well the Church of Latter Day Saints have the 1881 census transcripts online. These can be easily searched without charge so we have included a link so you can get the piece and folio references needed by the image viewer.

To use their site select 1881 British Census at the top, then at the bottom of their page select Country England and County London. You can then enter the First and Last name of the person you’re researching and click on search.
The system will return the Piece and Folio reference which can be used to view the appropriate pages. A folio references two pages so its worth browsing a page either way. The folio number is stamped on every other page at the top right hand corner.
We have asked permission to integrate a free to search index on the site as this would make searching and viewing pages easier. The current system isn’t too difficult.
The London 1881 will quickly be followed by all other counties giving complete coverage of all years of census on TheGenealogist.

GENFair – The online Family History Fair www.GENfair.co.uk

For the initial period we are offering county societies the incentive of free equipment (Laptops, Projectors and computer storage). This is open to those that also allow us to host the data on a royalty basis on Thegenealogist.co.uk
Societies and individuals that own their own parish records can derive revenue from this indexing and transcription project. This is an important way to open up society data worldwide so that members can benefit from the research.
With 50% royalties and free equipment there has never been a better time to get online.

Family Legends: Shadow or Substance? by David Roberts
There is no such thing as an ‘ordinary’ family any more than there might be ‘ordinary’
people. We all have our tales to tell as individuals. So it is with families.
Anyone who has reflected on their family history is sure to have wondered about the family stories and
legends we all heard in our childhood. Who hasn’t heard seemingly far-fetched tales as a child
– ones that you could scarcely believe even in your naïve, gullible years and which as an
adult seem even more laughable?
Although in later years one can look back at them, and see a glimmer – just a glimmer mind you
– of truth.
As a child I recall asking my grandmother (b 1870) about the family history. I would say – “…and
where did he come from?” “…and where did his father come from?” In common with
most readers perhaps, how I wish I had pursued this line of enquiry even further.
An early recollection was that of being told that Charles, one of my grandfather’s brothers,
joined the North West Mounted Police, later to become the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I may have been
sceptical because my grandfather (b 1857) never mentioned it. It was my mother who did so. The
difference is simply that my mother is a romantic at heart (I use the present tense because she is now
100 years old), and I was aware of this characteristic even as a small child.
