Dear Family Historian,
Happy New Year from everyone at S&N! We hope you enjoyed your holidays.
In this issue, we start with a look at what will be coming online throughout 2015:
Parish Records, detailed County and Tithe Maps, millions of new Medals Records, more
Grave Memorials from the Volunteer Headstone Project, records of Railway Workers from
Pensions to Staff Movements, Jewish records, detailed Street Maps, Passenger Lists,
Emigration Records and more War Memorials are all going online at TheGenealogist this
year.
This month we've released more War
Memorials Parish Records
and we have now added the 1911 census
for all Starter and Gold Subscribers!
You can make the most of this with £30 cash back on our Annual
Gold Subscription, making it just £48.95 for the first
year!
There's no better way to start the new year than with some special offers - you can
claim £50 cashback on a Diamond
Subscription to TheGenealogist, and
save £££s in our New Year Sale over at S&N Genealogy
Supplies. We also take a look at 2014 in review.
The Bracknell family history fair is on this weekend. Our readers can
get £1 off your admission price with our voucher. Visit
TheGenealogist and if you are one of the first 50 to mention the email news you’ll
get a free goody bag!
Ancestors that fell foul of the law are always fascinating subjects for family history
research. Our article this month is a Victorian murder story of a notorious
Madam who escaped the hangman's noose.
We hope to see you on Sunday, and wish you all the
best for the year ahead!
Best Regards,
The S&N Team

2014 in Review
The release of new content last year gave subscribers excellent value for money and made
it a fantastic year in terms of growth with the addition of the following:
- Millions more Parish Records for many counties.
- The launch of ‘The National Collection of Tithe Records’ in an exclusive
partnership with The National Archives. For the first time you are now able to
search both land owners and tenants of over 11 million tithe
records and view the original documents online.
- The new ‘International Headstone Image Database’ was also launched this
year so that you can now view transcripts and images of ancestor's memorials in a
growing number of cemeteries.
- Many new WWI Military Records have been uploaded to our site this year, including
the most comprehensive collection of First World War 'Wounded' with over 1.3
million records for British and Commonwealth servicemen injured in the
conflict. A further 810,000 plus
Military Records of WWI soldiers including over
226,000 unique Missing in Action records, more
than 574,000 Killed in Action and nearly 14,000 Status
Updates.

World War.
- A unique and comprehensive set of records of over 117,000 ‘Military
Medals’ awarded during WW1 for ‘acts of gallantry and devotion
to duty under fire’.
- Plus thousands of Distinguished Conduct Medals and Territorial Force Efficiency
Medals
- Over 81,000 records of people Mentioned in Dispatches in The First
World War.
- Home and Overseas General Court Martial records covering 1879 to 1927. The new
records take into account the hundreds of WW1 British and Commonwealth soldiers that
were executed for cowardice and desertion.

S&N Genealogy Supplies: 2014 in Review
2014 saw the release of two major software releases. In November, RootsMagic released version 7 of its award winning software and this month it
has been awarded "Best Genealogy Product of 2014" in the GeneAwards
2014.
Family Historian also announced their latest offering with Family Historian 6 being released in December.
Family Tree Maker opted not to release a new annual version this year,
however they have been hard at work releasing patch updates to the 2014
version. |

With the rise of digital media and cloud based storage becoming evermore present
in today’s society, it came as a surprise to find that binders and sleeves are becoming more and more popular. This must be down
to increasing awareness that incorrectly storing original documents can
seriously damage them. Great care must be taken to avoid damaging the very
precious, sometimes unique, documents. We have a vast range of
archival materials available to genealogists to enable longevity of your
precious items, so why not make it your new years resolution to organise and
store that shoe box of old photos or all those BMD certificates you have ordered
over the years? |
|
Although taking care of original documents should be everyone's top priority,
you should also consider creating digital copies so that they can be shared with
other family members, included with family trees on your computer, or even as
backups in case of a disaster. One of our most popular items is the Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner, which can scan photos in albums, certificates and
other precious
documents through protective sleeves and even through photo frames. Larger
documents can be scanned in multiple passes and merged together using the free
stitching software that comes with the scanner.
2014 also saw the introduction of our Window Springback Binder, which allows for a custom front cover page to
show through the window of the binder. The Springback Binders allow easy binding of pages to enable you to publish
your family history at home, and should you need to update at a later stage,
the pages can easily be removed and rebound. |

one simple form to search across our millions of records, including Parish Records,
Wills, Newspapers, Census, Non-Conformist Registers, and more.
You can narrow down your results quickly using the keyword box. A search for John Smith
would return too many results, however entering the keyword 'Butcher' would return only
those who were Butchers.
