Launch of 1901 census transcript and electoral roll on The Genealogist

In order to continue to provide our customers with as much data as possible on The Genealogist we have recently licensed two very useful sets of data:

  • a complete 1901 census transcript for England & Wales
  • the electoral roll for London 2005.

These datasets are now available as pay-as-you-go subscriptions with prices starting at just £5 for each.

To buy, go to our pay-as-you-go subscriptions page: www.thegenealogist.co.uk/nameindex/payg_products.php. The 1901 census is in the census transcript section and the electoral roll is in the specialist indexes section.

Unfortunately, due to the conditions of our licence for this material and in accordance with our terms & conditions we are unable to include these records in our all-inclusive packages. However, we are adding a range of new services into the all-inclusive package; see the article on Roots UK versus The Genealogist for details.

RootsUK versus TheGenealogist

RootsUK is our new genealogy website (www.RootsUK.com) which gives no-ties access to the essentials. On it you can find Birth, Marriage and Death indexes, Census Transcripts and the London Electoral Roll. It allows you to start researching your tree for only £5.

So why introduce such a service?

The answer is simple: we had been asked for a low cost start-up service that didn’t have any obligations in terms of subscriptions. We also felt that a clear user interface displaying just the bare essentials would make it easier for those just starting to research their family history online.

The costs

Standard searching is FREE

Viewing a full record uses credits the first time you view it

Viewing a full record that you have already seen is FREE for 30 days

Viewing a page image uses credits the first time you view it; viewing a page image that you have already seen is FREE for 30 days

Performing an advanced search uses credits

Performing a SmartSearch™ uses credits and so does viewing records.

Viewing records will cost from 2 credits upwards.

Producing a surname-distribution map costs 10 credits

Your credits are valid for use on all of our Roots UK databases for over a year.

Credits will normally cost from under 4p each:

£ 5 for 100 credits (5p each), or

£ 14.95 for 400 credits (under 4p each; save £5)

Double Credits Offer

Credits normally cost from under 4p each but while the site is undergoing Beta testing we are offering double credits! That means they can cost less than 2p each. Hurry - this offer is for a limited time only. All you need to do is start searching and the system will prompt you when you need to buy credits. The site has had no reported errors for over a month now so the Beta period will end soon.

The Genealogist

The Genealogist has a much wider choice of records and offers detailed guides on how to research your family history. It now offers subscriptions from £14.95 a quarter with a minimum term of twelve months.

The cost for the dedicated researcher on The Genealogist is much lower, especially with the credit-free options. The Premium annual subscription at just £68.95 gives you unlimited access to the site for personal research.

We will be adding more Parish Records, more land records, more census transcripts, will indexes and marriage licenses to the site over the next month.

The technology for displaying records is also being updated to give you options to browse resources by bookmarks or conduct searches.

We have been implementing the improved searching techniques and interface developed for Roots UK in parts of The Genealogist.

So which service is best?

Well, that depends on your personal circumstances. Roots UK is great for those wanting to dip their toe in the water or search for the odd relative, and The Genealogist is better for those wish to perform more in-depth research and need a wide variety of ever growing resources.

This reduces the cost for hardened genealogy addicts wanting to explore every last branch of their tree.

We are always happy to receive good feedback- here is an email from Steve Lambert-Gibbs, a subscriber to The Genealogist:

‘This is to say a big thankyou for having a site that does what it claims. I have to also say I am not happy with having paid more than ten times as much on other sites that just didn’t work. Well done and again thankyou.’

And here’s an email we received relating to Roots UK:

‘The sheer volume of information I have found on the RootsUK website is incredible ’
