Dear Family Historian,
With the summer weather finally upon us, and the London 2012 Olympics already begun,
we've decided to celebrate in our genealogical way by releasing a mass of London
directories and Parish Records. With hundreds of thousands of Parish
Records, our major collection of London Directories,
and over 17 million new birth records going live it's a great
time to search our records.
Speaking of the games, our article features the major success we had in a previous
London Olympics which only happened because mountains literally
moved.
If you are looking for a diversion from the inevitable saturation coverage of the
Olympics, try delving into the many new records now available on TheGenealogist.
TheGenealogist has made research even easier with its brand
new all-in-one search feature, which allows users to find their ancestor's
records all in one go.
Don't miss out as it's your last chance to take advantage of our special £50 diamond discount offer which finishes this August.
Your DNA could hold the secrets to your ancestry, and now has never been a better time
to find out as prices fall within the reach of all, read our article
and find what answers your genes could provide.
Learn about how one Jerseyman pitched his ingenuity against
the German might to get news of the German occupation of this British Crown
Protectorate. The Channel Isles Monthly Review kept
islanders, who had evacuated to the UK, in touch with their friends and relatives as
well as listing islanders' Births, Marriages & Deaths.

Search across all records at TheGenealogist
TheGenealogist.co.uk is launching a
brand new all-in-one search feature, which allows users to find their
ancestor's records in one simple search. This is being launched in Beta initially and we
are inviting subscribers to have a go and let us know what you think.
For the first time you can enter an ancestor's name along with an approximate year of
birth and the option of keywords to trace an ancestors life through the records, from
birth to census, marriage and more.
The simple interface allows you to easily search millions of records from our collection,
including Non-Conformist Records, Parish Records, Wills, Electoral Registers,
Newspapers, Census and much more. Searches can be refined by year and/or a
keyword such as occupation or place of birth.
The example below example shows how the new search can locate an entry in the 1841, 1851,
1861, 1871 and 1881 census, as well a birth and marriage records, all on one page, for
the inventor of the modern chocolate bar, John Cadbury:

Your DNA could hold the answers to your ancestry, and now has never been a better time to
find out, as prices have fallen to be within reach of most family historians.
TheGenealogist has teamed up with Family Tree DNA, who have pioneered the use of DNA
testing for genealogical research. This means your DNA will be added to the world's
largest genealogical DNA database to help you find even more matches.
DNA testing is great for breaking down brick walls, finding unknown relatives or
discovering your genetic ethnicity. This is a fairly new experience for family
historians, and it can sound rather daunting – our article explains how easy (and
painless!) DNA testing is, and what it can do to help you.

The Channel Islands Monthly Review
With German forces threatening the Channel Isles during WWII the British government
consulted the Islands representatives. It was decided that the islands were not
defendable and would be demilitarised. A massive evacuation was carried out during
late June 1940 and those that wanted to leave the islands, boarded a flotilla of ships
to the UK where many settled.
The Channel Isles were the only part of Britain to be occupied during WWII and had
surrendered by 1st of July 1940.
During the war ex residents kept in touch with 'The Channel
Isles Monthly Review'. These list Births, Marriages and Deaths plus allowed
islanders to keep in contact with friends and family. This is now in the newspaper
section of the site and will grow as new issues are available.
This occupation period newspaper contained Births, Marriages and Deaths during the
occupation and was a vital contact between friends and families on the islands,
containing many detail letters and articles, such as the below exerpt:
Nov 1941 issue "A young Jerseyman has escaped from Jersey. Three days and three
nights in an eight foot boat without food." This was his third attempt and he
had previously spent four days on a rock that featured in Victor Hugo's "Les
Miserables" . This attempt he managed to evade two German E-boats that nearly
swamped his boat.
Conditions in the island weren't good as the Jerseyman reported:-
"The food supply is not the best. Fuel is short. Income tax is 4/6 in the pound to
pay the expenses of the army of occupation."
He also said to the Times that food is rationed and very scarce with Jersey butter,
cream and other products exported much against the will of the population.
"There is a total absence of fats on the island so there are no cakes or pastry
etc. The curfew is at 11pm"
People used the review to publish excerpts from letters about relatives on the islands
and give news of family members.
We have a selection of issues covering 1941-1945. These are available to Diamond
subscribers.
