We probably all have ancestors that fought for their country and whose contribution has been recorded in various records. These can give a detailed insight with photographs and biographies or just the bare details of a death record. Weekly newspaper resources give some feeling and vision into how life was on the frontline. With this annual time of remembrance we have tried to make available as many records as we can to help those searching for further details.

The stories of Ian Fleming certainly add a bit of glamour to the conflict between nations and organisations but the reality was a harsh one as Ian Fleming knew only too well. See our article on how his life was affected by the two World Wars.

Ian Fleming, the real 007

The Oxfordshire 1911 census is now available on TheGenealogist and includes James Bond author, Ian Fleming. As the focus around the country turns to our brave ancestors who fought in the First World War and we pay our respects to those who sacrificed everything, they are never far from a family historian's mind, as discovering the role our ancestors played in key events of the past is always an important part of our research. Ian Fleming's father Valentine died in France in 1917 and his younger brother Michael died in World War Two, so he was all too familiar with the cost of war, but he played a vital role of his own, as part of the Naval Intelligence for the Allied Forces in World War Two.

In this article we look back at the life of Ian Flemming and the influences behind his stories.
