New Records at TheGenealogist.co.uk

The following records have been added to our Diamond subscription

Militia Records

We have added Militia Muster records for England and Wales to our Diamond subscription.

Militia Musters at TheGenealogist.co.ukThe Militia Act of 1757 provided for men at home to serve in a militia in order to counter any threat, while the majority of the regular army was stationed abroad. Lists of eligible men in each parish were known as militia ballot lists and from these, the men actually chosen appeared in the militia lists.

Early surviving records for 1781 and 1782 are now available online uniquely at TheGenealogist.co.uk. These muster and pay lists provide details for the men in the regiments. County regiments, although recruited locally, often served away from home and these indexes tell precisely where, under whom and on what dates the men were mustered.

This dataset has been created from the records of WO 13, held at The National Archives.

From self-raising flour to hair-raising excitement

The unlikely founder of one of Britain’s most influential cinema production companies of the the 20th century was a devout Methodist who was reportedly called a ‘dunce’ by his wealthy industrialist father. However, his father seems to have massively underestimated the drive and enthusiasm of a son that took on the might of the Hollywood film industry and put Britain firmly on the ‘film-making’ map!

Who Do You Think You Are?

The heroic resistance of Marianne Faithfull's ancestors in Nazi occupied Europe and their defiance and then horrific experiences under the invasion of the Russians in 1945 may explain both the enduring strength and the troubled life she has led over the years.

Meanwhile, broadcaster John Simpson discovers he had an ancestor who was killed by the same poison as he saw used in Iraq. He also learns more about his family links with flying legend Samuel Cody.
