Dear Family Historian

It's been a busy month with The National Family History Fair at Gateshead, see our Facebook pages for pictures. It was nice to meet up with everyone and share tips on RootsMagic and TheGenealogist. We've added a lot to the TG service and will be attending a large number of events in the run-up to Christmas.

Come and see S&N at a Family History Fair near you and save with our show offers. See our the events list.

With up to 50% off on our website prices, you could save a fortune with our special offers on Software. You can now order Family Tree Maker 2010 at a special pre-order price, see the special offers section below.

The online subscriptions are about to change so this is the last chance to subscribe at £68.95 to TheGenealogist

TheGenealogist has added over 4.5 million UK records since the last email news in August.

We have now finished the 1881 census, this completes our census from 1841 to 1901 as transcripts including images. We are the only service that offers transcripts with images for the whole of this period. We have also added parish records for several new counties.

Our unique phonetic search is a groundbreaking way to find those long lost relatives. Read more about this below.

This Friday we are exclusively launching RG36 GRO Registers and Returns of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the Protectorates of Africa and Asia, covering dates 1895-1965 in association with The National Archives. This is just one of the major additions to our overseas GRO records. We have also added more WWI records with biographies and photos.

This month read our article on the Brontë's . If you have an interesting tale to tell about how our records have helped you to trace your roots to fame or discover a celebrity relative, you could win £100 worth of vouchers. The best article of the year wins a computer. See featured articles under the Community section of TheGenealogist

Forums are a great place to discuss your research and the launch of Roots-forum.co.uk gives you a chance to get help with problems, learn about events and even track down societies or archives. Don't forget, you can see our Facebook page for news, discussions and photos of events. Just click on the links to follow TheGenealogist and GenealogySupplies on Twitter.

All the best

Sue and Nigel (S&N)

    TheGenealogist.co.uk What's New Online

We have added millions of records into the All-Inclusive subscriptions which cost as little as £4.66 a month.

    New Data and Services

1881 census (Millions of records added)

The final counties for 1881 have now been completed adding over 3 million records of original transcripts with linked images.

We are the only service that offers transcripts with images for the whole of this period.

The records can be searched under the appropriate county census transcripts, Master Search or Family Search.

Non-Conformist Records - RG36 Registers and Returns of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the Protectorates etc. of Africa and Asia

Covering dates 1895-1965. Notifications of birth, marriage and death forwarded by officials responsible for civil registration under administrative ordinances in Nyasaland, Kenya, Somaliland, Uganda, Sudan, Palestine, Sarawak, Malaya, including Johore and Selangor, and British North Borneo. They have been added to the freely searchable online service at BMDRegisters and viewable as part of subscriptions to TheGenealogist.co.uk. These newly added records were previously only viewable on microfilm at The National Archives.

Phonetic SearchPhonemic Search - Bayley (Click to enlarge)

The crux of a decent search system is one that gives you valid results and also finds all the spelling variations for the name you're interested in. Many services have tried to offer this but failed dismally. The first search technology used was Soundex, then double metaphone, and then a host of methods that pay very little attention to the sounds of names and produce a majority of unsuitable matches. Many services give a fuzzy search that drowns you in results with names that are nothing like the surname you entered.

We believe we have found the perfect solution with our new search that's based on phonemic speech patterns. Take a look at the results for bayley by clicking the image on the right.

The Keyword search and Census Transcript search have now been encoded and we will expand this coding to all our data. So now is a good time to try and find those elusive ancestors on TheGenealogist.co.uk.

    Parish Record Transcripts

We have just added over 400,000 parish records to our databases covering:

Cheshire with over 33,000 individuals, years ranging from 1557 - 1837 with images

Cornwall with over 260,000 individuals ranging from 1531 - 1917 with images

Durham with over 22,500 individuals ranging from 1569 - 1812.

Also Northumberland Parish Registers have been added to the Parish Records (Printed Books) section on the site with years ranging from 1572 - 1812 including the parishes of Alnham, Beadnell, Berwick -upon-Tweed, Bothal, Hebburn, Chatton, Edlingham, Eglingham, Halton, Ingram, Lesbur, Meldon, St. Nicholas Cathedral (Newcastle-upon-Tyne), Tynemouth & Whalton.

We have completed our 1812 - 1849 Baptism Parish Transcripts for Worcestershire adding a further 77,000 individuals, bringing the total to over 430,000.

    Tracing the Brontë FamilyBronte Sisters

"Although the legacy of the Brontë family now lives on into its third century, the life of the sisters themselves was in fact very short-lived and all died before reaching the age of 30.  As well as the famous sisters, Emily, Charlotte and Ann, there were also two elder sisters Elizabeth and Maria who both died of TB in 1825 before reaching the age of 13.  The only son, Patrick Branwell, also died in 1848, at the age of 31.

Despite their short lives, it's possible to trace this family in early records which are available online at www.thegenealogist.co.uk. The Yorkshire census records are now complete on The Genealogist from 1841 through to 1901, and the 1841 is the only census to show all three sisters."
