Free talks will be held throughout the day, you can pick up your free timetable at the entrance or at one of our stands. Talks include:

10:30 - 11:15 A Window into the Past: Image based resources for family historians
with David Osborne

This talk looks at dating old photographs and discusses the various types from Ambrotype to Tin Type. It also shows you how to use images to enhance your family history and looks at a variety of image-based record sets and a free online image archive.

11:30 - 12:15 Secret Army: The British Resistance Organisations 1938-45
with Malcolm Atkin

It is not uncommon to find those who served in World War II to be very reticent about telling their story - none more so than those who volunteered for the various secret guerrilla organisations that were created to resist a Nazi invasion of Britain. Many families never knew their stories. This presentation outlines the remarkable multi-layered system that was put in place, and the conflicts it entailed between SIS (MI6) and the War Office over the roles of civilian and soldier in irregular warfare.

12:30 - 13:15 Breaking Down Brick Walls: overcoming barriers in your research
with Mark Bayley

How to resolve stumbling blocks in your family history research using new and unique search strategies to find those missing relatives. Includes searching for a family using just the individuals' forenames, keyword search tools, and other advanced search techniques. Also covers unique data sets such as Non-Conformist & Non-Parochial records, Fleet marriages, Will images, Newspapers and more.

13:30 - 14:15 Women VADs in World War I
with Paul Handford

The transition of women from a life in Edwardian Britain to becoming ambulance drivers operating on the Western Front during WW1. The talk examines the prejudices faced by the women at this time and how they overcame these difficulties to undertake a most vital role during the war, both along the Lines of Communication but also at the 'Front'.
