These are ZIP files, once you have downloaded the file you will need to extract it using Windows extraction tools or a program such as Winzip (Winzip is not associated with S&N Genealogy Supplies or S&N British Data Archive, therefore any problems or technical issues cannot be dealt with by us).

To extract with Windows XP, right click on the file and select "Extract all". Follow the extraction wizard.

Once extracted, double left click on the file and then click "Yes" and then "OK". Reboot your system and then run the index. After this you can remove the files from your system.

Please note that firewalls and anti-virus software may see these files as being malicious, so you may need to "allow" the download or disable your security.

Newer Indexes (versions 1.2, 1.21, 1.2x)

When entering serial numbers please make sure that you use the number zero (0) and not the letter O.

If you have an internet connection - Enter your serial number and information into the registration form then click the "Register" button. You will then be asked if you wish to test your internet connection. Make sure you are connected and then press "Yes". If you are correctly connected to the internet you will see a message stating "Connection OK". Click "OK". In the "Confirm" window click "Yes". You should then get a message that your registration is complete.

Note: You may need to disable your firewall software to allow your registration to process correctly.

If you do not have an internet connection - Enter your serial number and information into the registration form then click the "Register" button. You will then be asked if you wish to test your internet connection. Click "No". Next you will be asked "Please double-check your registration information. Ready to register online now?" click "No". You will now be prompted to restart the index. Registration is now complete

Older Indexes (versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1x)

Use "Automatic registration over Internet" as this is the easiest option if your PC has an internet connection. Start a browser/Internet Explorer window first and check you can connect to the internet first (try browsing to your favourite website or www.genealogysupplies.com) before using the Activate button. You will need to allow the application access if you have a firewall.

If the firewall blocks activation use the "Go online to register" option which allows you to register via a browser window.

Ensure you type the serial number and activation codes correctly, in CAPITALS and that '0's are typed as zeros (there are no letter 'O's).

If you have access to the internet elsewhere make a note of your Unique code and Serial number and use this link to online registration. You will need to note, print or email the activation code.

If you don't have an internet connection or run into problems choose "Manual registration over phone" and call us on 01722 716121.

Minimum or full installation?

^Top

If you have the space, it's best to choose a full install as this won't require the CD to be in the drive when you use the software. It will also speed up the searches.

Check that you have the appropriate amount of hard drive space free and then carry out a full installation. If you don't have the space use the Minimum Install option.

Why do we have an activation system?

^Top

Because of problems with the piracy of CDROMs we now need to protect the data and software to be able to recoup the money spent on transcription and development of products.

Help with searching

^Top

If you don't succeed with a search on Forename, Surname and Age widen your search by using wildcards.

e.g. If you are searching for Julia Thompson Aged 50

You may need to widen the search to Jul* Thom* just in case the spelling differs. Enumerators often spelt the names how they thought they should be and ages can't always be relied upon.

Don't forget to click on the Search button after entering the parameters.

Hints on finding the right page on a CD set

^Top

The references in the main are to a page in the CD set so to find the image open up the piece on the appropriate CD (See the back of the CD set booklet) and then use CTRL N and enter the CD page number.

Don't forget that some of the images are two pages one above the other so you may need to scroll down the page to see the person referenced.

If the index gives you a folio reference open the piece and click on the nearest folio bookmark and page down to that folio.

It may also be worth checking adjacent pages as families can go over two pages.
