A Story of Courage by Carole Pharoah MBEWhilst indexing the Kings Lynn census I made a discovery about my great, great grandmother, Elizabeth
Hornigold (1845 - 1927). She was one of 13 children born to William and Margaret (nee Grimmett)
Hornigold of Kings Lynn, Norfolk. I then discovered at the age of 16 Elizabeth gave birth to an
illegitimate daughter, Elizabeth Adelaide Hornigold. She remained unmarried for another twenty years,
bringing up her daughter Elizabeth on her own. At about age 40 she married Edward Carlyon, a widower and
retired Army Sergeant. They moved to his home county of Cornwall where they lived in a little cottage in
Coverack, until he died in 1907.

WHAT’S NEW ONLINENew Surname Map featureOne major problem when you are researching your Family History is to locate those wandering ancestors. Where is the most likely place to find them? Where did they come from? The biggest changes in population shift were brought about by the Industrial Revolution and the population nearly doubling between 1841 and 1891. This caused the creation of large cities surrounding centres of commerce and industry. One way to see the changes of location is by using maps of surname concentrations. Rather than basing the maps on the later 1881 census, long after the major population movements, you are given a choice of census years back to 1841. Subscribers to All-Inclusive subscriptions on www.TheGenealogist.co.uk can now view these surname maps for any year of census. An All-Inclusive subscription can cost as little as £14.95 for three months giving access to the largest collection of census transcripts, BMD and much more. New Features designed to make using TheGenealogist more friendlyThe Research Log - allows you to store individual details or a family to browse at your leisure. At the moment you can add records to your research log from the census transcripts; we will be adding the facility to BMD indexes, census indexes and parish record transcripts in due course. Memorise your Search Criteria – Great for hopping around different census counties and years so you don’t have to keep typing in the same search criteria. Currently available on census transcripts. E.g. Let's say you are looking for John Turner in London:
Parish Register Transcription Projectwww.TheGenealogist.co.uk has started a major transcription project to transcribe Parish Records from microfilm. This will enable you to search through baptisms, marriages and burials back to the early 1500's. County archives can join the scheme and receive free use of the service for visitors. This is a great way for archives to provide fully-searchable databases of their records. We offer transcription and indexing services in return for access to the material. The site has now got transcripts for various parishes from Wiltshire and Nottingham live, and we are about to add parts of Kent. Many more counties will be added over the year. This is in addition to their special PDF book interface which gives searchable access to thousands of historic books which include Parish records, Land Records and Directories. For archives and organisations interested in the project ring 01722 717005 or our main number 01722 716121.
[16 Jan 2007] We have also added over a million more records to our London 1901 transcript. [5 Jan 2007] The Channel Islands 1861 is now available as both a transcript and an index, completing our set. We have also added a new directory to the site today for Midlands and East Anglia Counties. You can also use the mapping feature in the BMDs for modern surname mapping. Also two new specialist records have been added, Irish Landowners and Scottish Landowners. [13 Dec 2006] Irish Wills index are now searchable. Channel Islands 1851 and 1871 complete transcripts and indexes. Images of the original census pages have been added to the transcripts for: Lancashire 1891, Herefordshire 1841, Glamorgan 1841 and 1851 and Yorkshire 1861. We have also made the current state of the London 1901 transcript available.
All of the new data has been added into the All-Inclusive subscriptions which cost as little as £4.66 a month. |
