We’ve had a great start to the new year with the completion of our National Archives project for Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial records. The last section RG35 is now live.

We have also added more Parish Records and a new research guide to TheGenealogist. We have a big program ahead with new data to get your research before and after the census.

This month sees several major events: the East of London FHS open day and the massive Bracknell fair.

We also have an article on the famous diarist Samuel Pepys.

Don't forget to catch our special customer offer of 2 for 1 tickets to Who Do You Think You Are Live in London the last weekend of February. Also don't miss your chance to be on TV in a new BBC programme.

Foreign Death Returns RG35 1791-1921

This series contains death certificates issued by foreign registration authorities and churches, copies of entries in the registers kept by British embassies, incumbents of English churches and chaplains, notification of marriages of servicemen during service abroad, and documents deposited for safekeeping. They include an incomplete collection of certificates of British military deaths in France and Belgium, 1914 to 1921, issued by the registration authorities of those countries. RG35 contains 83,734 entries.

Overseas BMDs

We have added over 110,000 records, with images, to our overseas BMD record set. Bringing the total number of records to over 1,300,000. This transcript covers the births, marriages and deaths of British Service Personnel throughout the world. The data set now includes:

PCC Wills Index and Images

We have added to our PCC Wills and probate records. The wills are searchable by name, year of will, year of probate, area and profession. The search results also show the image of the original record. We now have over 100 year's worth of wills available. This will shortly be expanded to cover all years.

The above Foreign Death Returns (RG35) completes these records, which are available at: www.BMDregisters.co.uk and TheGenealogist.co.uk.

There is a hidden treasure of people from every walk of life that may not be recorded elsewhere and that can now be easily and freely searched.

This unique record set contains a wide variety of  records covering non-conformist records, early birth registries, Maternity Records, Fleet Marriages, Burials, Overseas BMDs, BMDs aboard ships and British Churches abroad. Covering the period 1654 to 1950.

The Non-Conformist records cover Methodists, Wesleyans, Baptists, Independents, Protestant Dissenters, Congregationalist, Presbyterians, Catholics, Unitarians, Quakers (Society of Friends), Dissenters, Royal Chapels and Russian Orthodox.

Many famous  writers, entrepreneurs, social reformers and political leaders are within these records which before the project was completed would have taken a lifetime to search.

The Fleet Marriages alone have proved a stumbling block to many researchers when browsing the microfilm. John Titford, author and speaker, found his missing relative within just a few minutes of using the site.

Famous historic figures in the records:
John Cadbury, Henry and Joseph Rowntree, Florence Nightingale, Mary Shelley (Author), William Penn, John Wesley, William Blake, Elizabeth Gaskell, Anna Sewell (Author of Black Beauty), Daniel Defoe (Author),  John Bunyan (author of Pilgrims Progress), George Fox, Christopher Wren and the Wedgwood family (China)

Royals in the records
- King Charles II.
- James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, (illegitimate son of Charles II) - a noble recognized by some as James II of England,  launched the 'Monmouth Rebellion' against King James II in an attempt to depose him. Died 1685 / RG8.
- Charles II Stuart, King of England died 1685 / RG8.
- Princess Mary of Denmark, born and baptised 1685 /RG8 (daughter of Princess Anne of Denmark, later Queen Anne).
- Prince George of Denmark and Lady Anne Stuart marriage  (James II's daughter) 1683 / RG8.

Celebrating 350 years of Samuel Pepys

As we enter a New Year and decade, many of us have been thinking of New Years resolutions, of new projects and new beginnings. 350 years ago Samuel Pepys was also thinking the same thing and began writing a diary on 1st January 1660. He continued writing his diary on a daily basis for almost ten years, and this diary is now one of the most important documents of the period.

Samuel Pepys experienced first hand the horrors of the Great Plague in 1665 and the Great Fire of London which followed in 1666. He was present at the execution of Charles I and saw five different monarchy’s during his lifetime.
