BMD Registers - The Hidden Records - Official National Archives SiteBirth, Marriage and Death Records are the most important way of tracking down your ancestors. The trouble is the BMD records in the General Register Office main index only go back as far as 1837. The hidden Birth, Marriage and Death records have been compiled from various unpublished registries and many unusually include records of three generations of a family. These are a fantastic resource for the family historian and often prove to be the only record of the events. The returns from various registries were submitted to the GRO but it was felt as these events were not part of the official system they would not be included in the standard GRO index. These records are now held at The National Archives. Genealogy Supplies recognising the importance of the records applied and won the bid to make these available online as part of The National Archives LIA scheme on the site www.BMDregisters.co.uk This new release of online records means that for the first time these additional BMD records can be searched with ease rather than looking through millions of images on thousands of reels of microfilm. Many famous non conformists helped shape the world in which we live and famous writers abound:- Daniel Defoe (Robinson Crusoe) Listed as Mr Dafow, William Blake (Jerusalem) and Mary Shelley nee Godwin (Frankenstein). The site www.BMDRegisters.co.uk allows you to search over six million individuals with ease and allow you to see three generations of a family for many of the records. Lets have a look in more detail on how to use the material and what it will provide... READ THE FULL ARTICLE |

Parish Records – We can all benefitWe have been working a pace on adding new parish records to the site. This involves transcribing film and fiche as well as making available older transcripts of parish records. We don’t want to duplicate work, if societies can work with us on these projects everyone will benefit. Societies and individuals that own their own parish records can derive revenue from this indexing and transcription project. This is an important way for societies to fund equipment, events and facilities. S&N are launching a new service to help societies get their data online and derive significant
benefits from it without losing control or creating headaches in maintaining systems. For Societies The site will have a master index allowing customers to find society resources countrywide that match
their name interests within a given period. We are currently making agreements with archives and other organisations and need to plan which counties we will need to digitise and transcribe ourselves. So if you are involved in a society please let me know if you wish to discuss these opportunities before our own parish record transcription projects become too far advanced. Voyage of Discovery: Tracing a route to Captain James Cook by Eric CatonAs a young lad, one of my delights was visiting my paternal grandmother Mary Crame Caton (nee Baker). She lived almost next door to my parents house, so the visits were frequent. She lived alone in one of the oldest houses still left standing in the town. It was built of sandstone, roughly plastered, and colour (yellow) washed once a year; lit by gaslight even to the year she died in 1956. It is also the house in which I was born. Among the many conversations we had, only two things stand out in my memory. The first, that we have French and Welsh blood running through our veins (well diluted by now) and second, that we are related to Captain James Cook. At the time those things didn't register much with me, I just took it for granted. After all, aren't grandmothers the fount of all wisdom and knowledge? And the family was/is of seafaring stock (except for me, that is!). It wasn't until 1977 when, as a (by now) minister in the Maori section of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand, in the Parish of Whakatane (North Island), thatI began to think more deeply of my 'relationship' to Captain Cook, and the need to establish it as fact.
