On March 26th 1569 , due to the threat of Spanish forces, the Privy Council issued a directive to the counties to hold a general muster of all men over 16. Certificates of the muster, with the names of the men and their equipment, were to be returned by July 1st though this was later extended to August 12th . This book contains a searchable transcript for Cornwall of this Muster.
In 1522 Wolsey, Henry VIII's chancellor, was badly in need of money to finance the war with France . A subsidy in 1514 failed to raise the expected amount and had to be repeated in 1515 and 1516. The Reign of Charles II was exceptionally rich in the number and variety of taxes directly assessed on individuals. Of all these taxes only the hearth tax and earlier monthly assessments were the names of the taxpayers specifically required to be returned to the Exchequer.
