Throughout history monarchs and governments have needed to raise money for various causes. This is usually done by way of subsidies or taxes and of course lists had to be made of those who paid or were liable to these taxes. This CD contains the lists of those, in Devon , who were eligible for a number of taxes between the years of 1581 and 1660.

On March 26 th 1569 , due to the threat of Spanish forces, the Privy Council issued a directive to the counties to hold a general muster of all men over 16 . Certificates of the muster, with the names of the men and their equipment, were to be returned by July 1 st though this was later extended to August 12 th .
